SUMO BOT COMPETITION Fuad Abdallah, August 23, 2021. This week had a very exciting start with a sumo bot competition. The sumo bot competition is a sport in which two robots attempt to push each other out of a circle.  We were assigned to create a sumo bot for this competition. Problems happen every day in our societies and as human nature, we always try to find a way to solve them. But what differentiates a solution from a good solution? What differentiates a solution from the solution that is needed? As Engineers and problem solvers, we should never solve problems for our societies inside our labs, but we should reach out to society. We should reach out and build a strong empathy then conduct interviews to better understand those who we are building a solution for, thereafter we can use our skills to make an impactful solution. FIRST WEEK OF LEMELSON INTERNSHIP 2021

During this week we started by learning Computer Aided Design (CAD) using Fusion 360 Software. Fusion 360 is nice software to get started with CAD because it has a simple and friendly user interface and cloud storage capability for the projects which allows working on different computers. We started drawing basic shapes and specifying basic dimensions as normal Engineering drawings. After we had covered some basics we were given a task to draw 3D shapes and print them using a 3D printer. The figure below is the drawing which I was tasked to draw. DESIGNING OF ULTRASONIC SENSOR AND INFRARED SENSOR (IR)  Ultrasonic sensor An ultrasonic sensor is a sensor that measures the distance to an object using ultrasonic sound waves. It uses a transducer to send and receive ultrasonic pulses that relay back information about an object’s proximity.   How Ultrasonic Sensors Work Ultrasonic sensors work by sending out a sound wave at a frequency above the range of human hearing.  The transducer of the sensor acts as a microphone to receive and send the ultrasonic sound. Our ultrasonic sensors, like many others, use a single transducer to send a pulse and to receive the echo.  The sensor determines the distance to a target by measuring time lapses between the sending and receiving of the ultrasonic pulse….

LEMELSON INTERNSHIP 1st WEEK!! The Lemelson Internship started with orientation in the Design Studio at Dar-es-Salaam Institute of Technology which was conducted by Joel, one of the teaching assistants. It began with a fun and creative activity of building a tower out of pieces of wire. This was aimed at implementing the team work spirit, working under pressure (since the provided time for completion was reduced purposely), optimum utilization of resources and so many other good lessons.
