Teamwork

Teamwork Bwere, Daniel E. In this internship, it is amazing how we work in teams. Unlike our classroom environment where most of the learning happens individually and sometimes in groups, the DIT Design Studio environment dwells on teamwork in order to get the job done.  During the introduction when most of my colleagues were not familiar with one another, we had a close activity called “Think-Pair-Share”. This activity initially involved proposing a question to the team, then each member was given time to think independently. Thereafter members got into pairs and shared what each one thought of the answer to the question given. Another activity was the icebreaker event which was a rapid prototyping session. This session was a competition…

BEGINNER’S MIND

BEGINNER’S MIND…Kanyempwe, Juma B. Quick Tip! One of the reasons people don’t learn any subject or skill faster is because they feel like they already know something about it, so they can’t learn something new…Does that make sense!? And one of the keys to be a faster learner is to begin with a beginner’s mind because if your cup is full you can’t put new information into it!!-Superbrain Beginner’s Mind:- In this week’s activity, we had hospital visits to Muhimbili National Hospital and Comprehensive Community Based Rehabilitation in Tanzania (CCBRT). The internship is super cool, so far we are constantly learning new skills everyday. Our main focus was on the mini project and the final project.   At    Muhimbili National Hospital…

Make it work

PROTOTYPING A prototype refers to the preliminary version of a device from which other devices will be developed. It is usually used for testing a concept. This week our group was mainly dealing with finalizing our prototypes which were on the IR-thermometer. The thermometer infers temperature from a portion of the thermal radiation emitted by an object being measured. It is sometimes called a laser thermometer as a laser is used to help aim the thermometer. It works by measuring the temperature of infrared energy which every material or object with a temperature above absolute zero radiates. A lens focuses the infrared radiation onto a detector which in turn converts this energy into an electric signal. After compensating for the ambient…

THE ROBOT CHALLENGE

Bwere, Daniel E. The week started with a hectic challenge of designing sumo robots to contest in the sumo robot challenge. The sumo robot had to be a three-wheeler: a single all-round wheel and two servo-driven wheels.  A lot had to be done which would help practise the skills gained on 3D printing, laser cutting and Arduino. My idea was to play both defense and offense. In offense, the robot would have a kicker, and in defense, the robot would be able to run if an opponent would come closer to a defined no-man’s land.   I began by designing the inner flat chassis on which the components were to be fixed. This wasn’t difficult since it was just…

Prototyping

Prototyping Bwere, Daniel E. A prototype is a draft version of a product that allows you to explore your ideas and show the intention behind a feature or the overall design concept to users before investing time and money into development.[1] Prototyping is the fourth phase in the design cycle that lets the design team develop quick practical concepts about their brainstormed ideas for testing before resources can be spent in developing the final product. “They slow us down to speed us up. By taking the time to prototype  our ideas, we avoid costly mistakes such as becoming too complex too early and sticking with a weak idea for too long.” — Tim Brown, CEO & President of IDEO Types…

Getting familiar. Time to learn new things

GETTING FAMILIAR… This week was a little bit challenging because most of us were not familiar with the learning environment. Most of us came with our own expectations but upon arrival, it was so cool and fascinating at the same time, to meet new people with almost similar and different expectations from me. Getting to know new people and their ideas is the most amazing thing about this first week. Upon arrival we were told that it was possible to turn our ideas into reality, this motivated me into wanting to learn more. In the process we started working with the CAD program (Fusion 360), laser cutting machine and 3D printer. When we were introduced it was a bit of…
